Description
Description
The 3798-S sc water conductivity sensor is based on a non-contact inductive measurement technique. Therefore, it is especially suitable for heavily contaminated environments. The robust PEEK housing makes the sensor durable.
Typical applications include:
- Inlet and/or outlet of a sewage treatment plant.
- Surface water if it is within the measuring range (> 250 μS/cm).
- Drinking water
The 3798-S sc inductive sensor is supplied calibrated and can be used immediately. In combination with SC controllers, the sensor can be combined with other HACH LANGE SC sensors if it is necessary to measure several water quality parameters at the same time.
The possible installation options allow the system to be adapted to different conductivity measurement conditions.
Basic principle of conductivity measurement
Electrolytic conductivity is the ability of a liquid to conduct electrical current (conductivity is the opposite of resistance). In metals, electric currents are transmitted by the movement of electrons, in liquids - by the movement of ions. The electrical conductivity of a liquid depends, on the one hand, on the concentration of ions, and on the other hand, on the temperature of the liquid.
To obtain the actual conductivity of the liquid (in S / cm), the measured conductivity value 1 / R (in S) must be multiplied by a factor that depends on the geometry of the probe and is called the "cell constant or K" (1 / cm).
To be able to compare measurements taken at different temperatures, the measurement must be converted to a reference temperature (typically 25 °C).
The principle of operation of the 3798-S sc submersible conductivity sensor
The probe tip consists of two coils, completely isolated from the environment:
- Primary coil (transmitter): An AC voltage is applied to the primary coil, which creates an alternating electromagnetic field in the surrounding fluid. This magnetic field generates an electric current in the liquid.
- Secondary coil (receiver): detects the current produced by the movement of ions and calculates the current conductivity of the liquid.
Electrical isolation between the liquid and the sensor (magnetic coupling) has a number of advantages over the traditional method of using metal electrodes: no polarization, hence a larger measuring range; high mechanical and chemical resistance; possibility of use in polluted environments.
