The principle of operation of the hydrogen sensor 31230.01
In its simplest form, an electrochemical cell consists of a metal anode and a metal cathode immersed in an electrolyte solution in contact with these electrodes. The electronic circuit is connected to the anode and cathode. Through the applied voltage, current will flow between the anode and cathode. The electrodes and electrolyte are separated from the gaseous or liquid sample by a gas-permeable membrane.
In addition, the sensor includes a protective annular electrode that surrounds the center electrode of the sensor. Its role is to reduce the influence of other gases on the center electrode, increasing the stability of the analysis.
The materials used for the sensor components differ depending on the application.
The sensor head is covered with a protective cap and, in some cases, a grill to protect the membrane.
Gas, penetrating through the membrane into the cell, dissolves in the electrolyte. It reacts at the cathode, causing a measurable electrical current to flow. This current is proportional to the amount of gas entering the cell. The amount of gas entering the cell is proportional to the partial pressure of this gas in the sample outside the cell.
The result is displayed in the form of gas concentration, which can be displayed with a choice of several units according to the instrument settings.
