Effective hardness control is the key to maintaining water stability in many processes. Hardness is used in conjunction with alkalinity, pH, TDS / conductivity and temperature to calculate the Langelier Saturation Index (LSI) to measure the tendency of water to corrode metals or scale up in a pipe. With continuous monitoring of these parameters, the operator is able to adjust the process to ensure compliance and maximize efficiency.
Automatic calibration, validation, and cleaning functions are built into the controller software to improve analytical performance, maximize uptime and minimize operator intervention. Precise micropumps doze all reagents. The sampling lines and analysis vessel are cleaned with demineralized water to eliminate cross-contamination between samples. The electronics and liquid reagent compartments of the analyzer are strictly separated.
Method Description for Determining Total Hardness with the Envirolyzer Analyzer
In an alkaline environment, calcium or magnesium react with calmagite to form a red complex. EDTA is added, which binds to calcium and magnesium, and the color turns blue again. The change in absorption is measured at 610 nm.
The analysis container is cleaned and filled with fresh sample. After sampling and adding acid, buffer and color solution, the initial absorbance is measured at 610 nm. The EDTA solution is then added and after a period of stirring to obtain full color development, the final absorbance value is determined. From the obtained values of optical density, the total concentration of hardness is calculated in accordance with Beer's law.
EZ Analyzer Method for Calcium Hardness determination
Determination of the concentration of calcium in water is based on the reaction of free calcium with hydroxynaphthol blue in an alkaline solution with the formation of a purple-red color. The indicator-calcium complex is released when EDTA is added, causing a blue color. The color change from red to blue is a measure of the amount of calcium present in the sample. Color change is measured at 610 nm.
The magnesium hardness concentration is calculated based on the total hardness and calcium hardness results.
