Description of the method: The colorimetric method of measuring hardness complements the traditional titrimetric method, as the colorimetric method measures very low levels of calcium and magnesium. In addition, some metals that interfere with the titrimetric method are not affected when the sample is diluted in order to bring it within the analytical range. The indicator dye is Calmagite, which forms a purple-blue color in a strongly alkaline solution and changes color to red when interacting with free calcium or magnesium.
Calcium and magnesium are determined by chelating calcium with EGTA to remove the red color from calcium and then chelating calcium and magnesium with EDTA to remove the red color from calcium and magnesium. Measurement of red in various states is used to measure calcium and magnesium concentrations. The measurement wavelength is 522 nm for spectrophotometers or 520 nm for colorimeters.
