Method description [10076]: Proper pH control in drinking water and swimming pools is necessary for many reasons. The bactericidal activity of chlorine is greatest at pH less than 7.4. Alum flocculants, important for pure water, work best in the pH range of 7.2 to 8.0. The pH is kept below 8.0 to combat algae. A sudden rise in pH can indicate an increase in algal growth. If the pH drops below 7.0, pipes and metal fittings can corrode. Eye irritation is minimized if the pH is kept between 7.2 and 7.6.
Phenol Red is a phthalein indicator that has a pH transition window from 6.0 (yellow) to 8.2 (red). pH is determined colorimetrically from the change in optical density of the alkaline peak.
