The BSC-1 from Hach is an economical kit for the control of scale build-up in small industrial boilers.
To determine the levels of alkalinity, hardness and chloride concentration in boiler water, a titration method is used (counting drops of added reagent until the color of the sample changes).
The kit includes: eight reagents, one volumetric tube, one flask, two mixing bottles, instructions and a carrying case.

Parameters and ranges determined by the test set BSC-1
- Hardness (0 - 20 mg / L CaCO3) - The hardness of the boiler or cooling water can cause scale in the system and reduce the efficiency of the boiler or cooling tower.
- Alkalinity (0 - 100 mg / L CaCO3) - Alkalinity is the ability of water to neutralize acids. Carbonates, bicarbonates and hydroxides are the main sources of water alkalinity. In a boiler system, alkalinity is adjusted to prevent corrosion due to low pH and to prevent scale build-up due to calcium deposits.
- Chloride (0 - 400 mg / L Cl–) - In boiler water, the chloride concentration is used to determine when the presence of dissolved solids has increased to a level that requires removal by blowdown.
