Acidity test recommendations
The presence of chlorine in the water sample may slightly interfere with the test. Up to 50 mg/L chlorine can be removed with 0.1 N. sodium thiosulfate solution, cat. No. 323-37. This solution is not included in the kit. Add one drop of 0.1N sodium thiosulfate solution to the sample before adding the indicator. Over-agitation of the sample should be avoided to prevent the loss of dissolved gases such as carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, or ammonia.
Free Acidity Test - High Range (0 - 400 mg/L CaCO3)
- Fill the volumetric tube with sample water. Pour the contents into a mixing bottle.
- Add 1 sachet of reagent (94399) to the mixing container and shake to mix.
- If the water turns gray-blue, blue, or green, the free acidity is zero.
- If the water turns pink, add Sodium Hydroxide Standard Solution (2349332) dropwise while holding the pipette vertically. Count each drop as you add. Mix the sample after each drop. Continue adding drops until the water turns gray-blue.
- The free acidity of the water, expressed in mg/L CaCO3, is equal to the number of drops of sodium hydroxide standard solution added multiplied by 20.
Acidity determination - Low range (0 - 100 mg/L CaCO3)
- Fill the mixing bottle with sample up to the 23 ml mark.
- Add 1 sachet of reagent (94399) to the mixing container and shake to mix.
- If the water turns gray-blue, blue, or green, the acidity is zero.
- If the water turns pink, add Sodium Hydroxide Standard Solution (2349332) dropwise while holding the pipette vertically. Count each drop as you add. Stir the mixing bottle after each drop. Continue adding drops until the water turns gray-blue.
- The acidity of water in mg/L, as calcium carbonate (CaCO3), is determined by multiplying the added number of drops of a standard sodium hydroxide solution by 5.
Step-by-step determination of total acidity (0 - 400 mg/L CaCO3)
- Fill a volumetric tube with a sample of water. Pour the contents into a mixing container.
- Add one drop of Phenolphthalein Indicator Solution (189736) to the mixing bottle and shake to mix.
- If the water turns pink, the total acidity is zero.
- If the water remains colorless, add sodium hydroxide standard solution (2349332) dropwise, holding the pipette vertically. Count each drop as you add. Stir the mixing bottle after each drop. Continue adding drops until the sample is slightly pink.
- The acidity of the water, expressed in mg/L as CaCO3, is equal to the number of drops of sodium hydroxide standard solution used, multiplied by 20.
