Application pack for the determination of R-SH thiols in fuels

Suitable for the Titralab AT1000 series of automatic titrators, models AT1112, AT1122 and AT1222.

Hach Kits contain all the elements except reagents so that each user can set up and run their tests quickly and easily. Each kit is specially designed for unique parameters to provide accurate and reproducible measurements.

Method for the determination of thiols (mercaptans) in fuel (ASTM D3227-13)

Method: Potentiometric titration.

This method covers the determination of mercaptan sulfur in gasolines, kerosene, aircraft turbine fuels and distillate fuels. Organic sulfur compounds such as sulfides, disulfides and thiophene, elemental sulfur in an amount of less than 0.0005 wt% do not distort the analysis results. Hydrogen sulfide will interfere with the determination if not removed.

The hydrogen sulfide-free sample is dissolved in an alcoholic titration solvent with sodium acetate and titrated potentiometrically with a silver nitrate solution using the potential difference between the glass electrode and the silver / silver sulfide electrode as an indicator. Under these conditions, the mercaptan sulfur is precipitated as silver mercaptide and the titration endpoint is indicated by a change in potential.
