Hach Titration Kit - Petrochem: TBN (Total Base Number)

TBN kit - potentiometric titration in petrochemical oils and lubricants. Suitable for the Titralab AT1000 series of automatic titrators, models AT1102, AT1112, AT1122 and AT1222.

Method: Total Base Number (TBN) ASTM D2896-11

Oils and lubricants have an alkali reserve designed to neutralize the acids generated during combustion to prevent corrosion of engine components. A low total base number (TBN) indicates an oil change is required.

TBN is determined by acid-base titration using HClO4 as titrant. TBN is expressed in mg KOH per gram of sample. Since the samples are not aqueous, they are diluted with a mixture of chlorobenzene and acetic acid. The HClO4 solvent is acetic acid.

TBN can be determined by back titration. An excess of perchloric acid standard solution is added to the sample, and then the excess HClO4 solution is titrated with sodium acetate standard solution.
