Analysis recommendations
- Rinse laboratory glassware with deionized water between tests.
- When titrating, count each drop of titrant. Hold the dropper upright. Rotate the bottle after adding each drop.
Procedure for the determination of carbon dioxide in water in the low (1.25 - 25 mg/L CO2) and medium (2 - 40 mg/L CO2) range
- Low Range: Fill the mixing bottle with sample to the 23 ml mark. Medium Range: Fill the bottle with sample to the 15 ml mark.
- Add one drop of phenolphthalein indicator solution (189736).
- Add sodium hydroxide solution (67132) dropwise. Count the drops until the color changes to light pink and lasts for 30 seconds. Shake to mix each drop.
- Low Range - Calculate Result: Each drop of sodium hydroxide solution used in step 3 equals 1.25 mg/L carbon dioxide (CO2).
- Medium Range: Calculate the result. Each drop of sodium hydroxide solution used in step 3 equals 2 mg/L of carbon dioxide (CO2).
Determination of CO2 in the high range 5 - 100 mg/L
- Fill the measuring tube to the top with the sample. Transfer the sample to a mixing bottle.
- Add one drop of phenolphthalein indicator solution (189736).
- Add sodium hydroxide solution (67132) dropwise. Count the drops until the color changes to light pink and lasts for 30 seconds. Shake to mix each drop.
- Calculate the result. Each drop of sodium hydroxide solution used in step 3 equals 5 mg/L of carbon dioxide (CO2).
