Summary of Method (Hardness, Total): After the sample is buffered to pH 10.1, ManVer 2 Hardness Indicator is added, and forms a red complex with a portion of the calcium and magnesium in the sample. EDTA titrant reacts first with the free calcium and magnesium ions, then with those bound to the indicator, causing it to change to a blue color at the end point.
Summary of Method (Hardness Calcium): The sample is made alkaline (pH 12-13) with potassium hydroxide to precipitate magnesium as magnesium hydroxide. CalVer 2 Indicator is added and combines with any calcium to form a pink-red color. As EDTA is added, it reacts with the free calcium ions present. When no free calcium ions remain, the EDTA then removes the calcium complexed with the indicator, causing a color change to blue.
