Description

Description

Drop counting titration kit for total hardness and calcium hardness (magnesium hardness can be calculated from the difference), range 20 - 400 mg/l CaCO3, 100 tests. The kit contains all the necessary reagents and equipment in a rugged portable case. Can be used for field analysis.

Preparation for analysis:

  • Hold the pipette vertically over the sample, do not touch the vial during titration.
  • Rinse tubes and vials with sample prior to testing. After the test, rinse the tubes and vials with deionized water.
  • The main ions that cause water hardness are calcium and magnesium. To calculate the magnesium hardness (as CaCO3), subtract the calcium hardness value from the total hardness value.

Determination of total water hardness 0 - 400 mg/L CaCO3

  1. Fill the volumetric tube with sample.
  2. Transfer the sample to a mixing vial.
  3. Add three drops of Hardness 1 Buffer Solution (42432).
  4. Rotate the bottle left and right to mix.
  5. Add one drop of Hardness 2 Indicator Solution (42532). A pink color will appear.
  6. Turn the bottle left and right to mix.
  7. Add the EDTA titrant solution (2349932) dropwise. Stir after each drop. Count the drops until the color changes from pink to blue.
  8. Multiply the total number of drops by 20 to get the result in mg/L.

Determination of calcium hardness of water (0 - 400 mg/L CaCO3)

  1. Fill the volumetric tube with sample.
  2. Transfer the sample to a mixing bottle.
  3. Add two drops of 8 N potassium hydroxide solution (28232H).
  4. Turn the bottle left and right to mix.
  5. Add one sachet of CalVer 2 Reagent (94799). A pink color will appear.
  6. Turn the mixing bottle left and right to mix.
  7. Add EDTA solution (2349932) dropwise. Stir after each drop. Count the drops added until the color changes from pink to blue.
  8. Multiply the total number of drops by 20 to get the result in mg/L.
