The Hach 9187 sc Complete Chlorine Dioxide System comes pre-wired on a panel (no controller included). Selective membrane eliminates chlorine interference
The Hach 9187sc amperometric ClO2 sensor uses a membrane that is selective for chlorine dioxide species. Bromine, chlorine or hydrogen peroxide will not interfere with the readings. Ozone may interfere, but is rarely present in chlorine dioxide-treated water.
Options for the 9187sc chlorine dioxide sensor:
- 9180sc Acidification / Cleaning Unit (LZY051) for amperometric sensors: for most amperometric measurements there are optimum pH ranges in which they will be most accurate. The addition of an acidifying / cleaning device can provide assurance that the samples are in the range suitable for measurement.
Compatible with Hach multi-parameter digital controllers
The Hach 9187sc is used with Hach digital controllers. Hach sc series digital controllers can accomodate from two to eight sensors. Several sc controllers can be networked to connect more sensors and therefore measure more parameters at the same time, which reduces the cost of the measuring point.
Simply plug in any Hach “plug and play” digital sensor and it's ready to go with no software setup. Plug and play connectivity means no complicated wiring or setup is required. Connect the 9187sc amperometric chlorine dioxide sensor to the controller in combination with any of the Hach digital sensors and measure dissolved oxygen, turbidity, ORP, conductivity and other key water parameters in your process in parallel.
Principle of operation
The measurement is carried out by the amperometric method after chlorine dioxide molecules enter the membrane. Chlorine dioxide molecules contained in the sample diffuse through the membrane and are then detected in a very thin electrolyte zone between the membrane and the cathode. A constant working potential is applied to the working electrode (cathode), where CIO2 decreases in accordance with the reaction:
ClO2 + 5e– + 4H+ ♦ Cl– + 2H2O
On a silver electrode (anode), silver is oxidized to:
Ag +: Cl– + Ag ♦ AgCl + e–
Decreasing chlorine dioxide at the cathode generates a current that is directly proportional to its partial pressure in the sample. The electrochemical reaction and diffusion through the membrane are temperature dependent; therefore, the measuring cell is equipped with a temperature sensor, which automatically compensates for changes in measurement depending on temperature.
