How the BOD TRAK II works

The Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) Manometric test is a test that measures the amount of oxygen consumed by bacteria that oxidize organic matter in a water sample. The test is used to measure the concentration of pollutants in wastewater treatment plants and to verify the effectiveness of wastewater treatment.

The device is sealed to prevent changes in external atmospheric pressure in the bottle. The pressure in the bottles is constantly monitored. The bacteria in the sample use oxygen when they consume organic matter. This oxygen consumption causes a pressure drop in the headspace of the bottle. The pressure drop is directly related to the BOD.

During the test period, mixers stir the sample and force oxygen to move from the headspace of the bottle to the sample. This helps simulate natural conditions.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the result of an oxidation process and can interfere with measurement. The device continuously removes carbon dioxide from the system so that the controlled differential pressure remains proportional to the amount of oxygen used. Changes in pressure in a closed system are graphically displayed in milligrams per liter (mg/L) on the LCD. The BOD TRAK II tool provides 360 consistent data points over a selected period of time.

The instrument corrects for any negative errors that occur when the sample is heated. The instrument does not start the test until the temperature reaches equilibrium.
