Description
At a pH of about 7, silver ions combine with two 1,10-phenanthroline molecules to form a colorless, water-soluble complex. The two molecules combined with the bromopyrogallol red molecule to form an insoluble blue precipitate. The blue precipitate is trapped by a nitrocellulose filter, which is compared against a color chart and matched against the corresponding color spot to obtain a semi-quantitative result.
Digestion and Dilution Procedure for Testing Using the Hach RapidSilver Test Kit:
- Open the filter holder;
- Use tweezers to place the filter in the filter holder and seal;
- Remove the plunger from the 140 cc syringe;
- Attach the filter holder securely to the syringe;
- Pour 100 mL of sample into the bottle;
- Add RapidSilver Powder Reagent;
- Cap the bottle and shake for 1 minute;
- Pour 100 ml of the prepared sample into the syringe;
- Push the sample through the filter
- Use tweezers to remove the filter from the holder. Compare the filter color with the Color Comparator Chart. Determine the silver concentration in the sample by matching the color on the chart.
